The tool runs U²-Net, an open-source salient-object segmentation neural network, directly in your browser. It predicts which pixels belong to the subject and turns everything else transparent. The model downloads once (about 4.5 MB) and is cached for future visits.
Which formats are supported?
JPG/JPEG, PNG, and WebP are supported as input. Output is always PNG, because PNG supports the alpha (transparency) channel that a background-free picture needs.
Does it handle hair and fuzzy edges?
The model produces a soft mask, so edges get natural feathering rather than a hard jagged outline. Fine hair and semi-transparent detail are the hardest case for any automatic tool — for studio-critical work you may still want manual touch-up, but for product photos, avatars, and thumbnails the result is ready to use.
Can I remove the background from multiple pictures at once?
